2020 Vision
A Little History…
423 Communities International was originally founded as a ministry of Westside A Jesus Church, then called Solid Rock, in the fall of 2009. Back then, an announcement was made about a new sexual recovery ministry called 423 Men and we started quickly with about 25 men in 2 groups.
Soon thereafter, our church launched Solid Rock Downtown and 423 Men thrived in both of these locations, Tigard and Portland’s urban center.
Westside has also been host to 423 Women where nearly 200 women have benefited from this ministry of sexual recovery since its start in 2014.
In October 2016, the Westside elders approved a plan for Dave to make 423 Communities a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization for the expressed purpose of “reaching outside the four walls” of our local church.
Since then, about 1,500 men, women, and young people have been actively involved in 423 Communities for sexual recovery.
What’s Happening Now…
Today, over 300 guys and about 20 women meet each week in over 30 groups (423 Men, 423 Women, 423 Sisters, 423 Young Men, and 423 Parents) at 20 partner churches in 4 states (Oregon, Washington, North Carolina, and Tennessee).
Westside AJC alone hosts 7 active 423 Men groups, plus 423 Young Men (for high school guys) and 423 Parents.
We have an active 423 Women group meeting at Grace City (NE Portland) with leaders ready to launch 423 Women groups at Westside AJC in Tigard and Rhapsody Church in Vancouver, as soon as there is a demand.
Besides Westside AJC and Bridgetown Church, host churches include Colossae (Tigard), Colossae (Hillsboro), Van City (Vancouver), Cedar Mill Bible (NW Portland), Northwest Christian (Newberg), The Bridge (Tigard), Riversgate Four Square (Multnomah Village), Mosaic (NE Portland), Clear Creek Church (Gresham), Oregon City Christian, Reformation Covenant Church (Oregon City), Grace City (NE Portland), Emmaus (North Carolina), City Collective (Chattanooga, Tennessee), Riverbend (Bend, OR), Outward Church (Salem, OR), and Ekklesia (Eugene, OR).
423 Sisters was established recently to assist women whose significant male partners struggle with sexual infidelity. This new group is almost full and meets at Colossae, Hillsboro.
We will launch our newest 423 Men group in Evansville, Indiana next month.
423 Communities has recently received invitations to start 423 Men at CalvaryMac (Calvary Chapel in McMinnville, OR) this March, and is close to launching 423 Men at Imago Dei (NE Portland).
Every single 423 Men group that started in the past ten years continues to thrive with new members. Not one group has failed.
Where We Believe God is Taking Us…
The mission of 423 Communities International is to… shine the light of the gospel of sexual sobriety in every dark corner of the globe. We work to accomplish this lofty goal exclusively by invitations from local churches. Jesus commanded us to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28.19-20). With your help we can reach the world!
Since the beginning of this year, 2020, we have received more than 30 new inquiries to join 423 Communities. That’s over one per day! Most of these men and women have been, or soon will be, placed in a 423 group for sexual addiction or trauma recovery.
Our Executive Director, Dave Scriven, plans to retire at the age of seventy, in about three years from now. After that time, Dave hopes to continue as a volunteer consultant and adviser in the expansion of 423 Communities. The time between now and Dave’s retirement is critical to the success of the vision Jesus has graciously given many hundreds of us who care about 423 Communities. The 423 Board of Directors believes our mission will be best fulfilled in the next three years in the following ways...
Increasing donations to employ an outstanding next Executive Director for 423 Communities International sometime in 2023.
Investing in video presentations designed to tell the story of 423 Communities and inspire the participation and support of people all over the world.
Fully automating 423 member intakes, placements, and transfer processes to further enhance scalability and meet anticipated growing demand for 423 recovery services.
Recruit, train, motivate, and equip 423 Area Directors who can assist with the vision to reach their cities with our unique sexual recovery methodology.
